The Flockly field notes
How to send Shopify product links from Instagram comments
Set up an Instagram comment-to-message rule that sends reviewed Shopify product or collection buttons while respecting current reply and rule limits.
Flockly can watch comments on a live Instagram post or Reel and send an eligible commenter a prepared private message. Meta's official Instagram API collection documents that professional accounts can manage and reply to comments, subject to the required permissions (Meta Instagram API). On Growth and Scale, an Auto-DM rule can include up to three product or collection buttons that lead to the public Shopify storefront. The merchant chooses the post, trigger, message and destinations before starting the rule. This is an Instagram-only workflow with provider limits, rather than a promise that every comment will receive a message.
Choose a campaign with a clear customer request
Comment-to-message works best when the post gives people a specific reason to ask. A product launch might invite “Comment LINK for the details”. A comparison post might use “Comment SIZE for the fit guide”. A collection preview could ask viewers to comment “SHOP” for the products shown.
The promised message and the actual destination should match. If the call to action offers one product, send that product. If it offers a collection, use the collection page. Do not use an engagement prompt that hides what will happen next.
A rule can match every new comment, but a keyword usually creates clearer intent. Choose a short word that is easy to spell and unlikely to appear in unrelated discussion. Include it visibly in the caption or creative. Test whether capitalisation and ordinary surrounding text behave as expected before relying on the rule for a launch.
Prepare the Instagram post first
Auto-DM works with a post or Reel that is already live on Instagram. Publish the campaign, then open Community → Auto-DM in Flockly and select New automation.
The Instagram account must be connected. If no eligible posts appear, refresh the available posts and confirm that the intended item is live on the connected profile. One post can have one active or paused rule at a time. Stop the old rule before trying to use that same post in another active campaign.
The image or video should make the offer understandable even before someone reads the private message. State what the product is, who it suits and what the commenter will receive. Keep price, availability and time-sensitive claims accurate at publication.
Create the rule
The setup has four practical decisions:
- Post: choose the live Instagram post or Reel to monitor.
- Trigger: leave keywords blank for every new comment, or add comma-separated words for selected comments.
- Message: write the short private reply the commenter should receive.
- Buttons: optionally add up to three Shopify product or collection destinations.
A useful message confirms why it arrived and gives the next step. For example: “Here are the travel sets from the post. Choose a set below to see current colours, prices and availability.” The storefront page remains the right place for live commercial details.
Review button labels and destinations individually. “Blue travel set”, “Neutral travel set” and “Compare all sets” are clearer than three buttons called “Shop now”. Avoid placing personal customer data in the message, and do not promise stock or delivery timing that the destination cannot support.
Review before starting
Read the post, trigger, message and buttons together. A mismatch between the public prompt and private response creates confusion even when the automation works correctly.
Check:
- the selected Instagram profile and live post;
- keyword spelling in the public call to action;
- whether blank keywords would respond too broadly;
- the exact text of the private message;
- every product or collection button;
- current product availability and campaign dates; and
- who will monitor replies after the first message.
Starting the rule authorises the prepared response to eligible new comments. A public reply, private reply and ordinary DM reply are different actions in Flockly Community. Check the selected action whenever a team member answers manually.
Understand the current limits
Auto-DM is included on Growth and Scale. The Instagram DM inbox itself is available on Starter, Growth and Scale.
An Instagram profile can currently create up to two new Auto-DM rules within 24 hours. This limits rule creation, not the number of matching messages. Each rule monitors for up to 15 days and checks for new comments about every 15 minutes, so delivery is not necessarily immediate.
Instagram only accepts a private reply to a comment while that comment is less than seven days old. Daily messaging capacity can also cause a rule to pause and continue later. A connection problem, unavailable post or network rejection can prevent a response.
Each eligible comment receives at most one Auto-DM from the rule. Repeated checks do not deliberately resend the same private reply. See Instagram DM inbox and Auto-DM for the maintained limits and troubleshooting steps.
Monitor the campaign and take over when needed
Open the rule to review its status, sent count, message, buttons and recent activity. Running means it is checking. Paused keeps the setup without checking for new matches. Stopped ends the campaign and releases the post. Expired means the 15-day monitoring period has ended.
The automated message is only the opening. Meta's official Instagram Send API reference explains that messaging access is permissioned and conversations begin through customer interactions with the professional account. Watch the Instagram DM inbox for questions about fit, delivery, variants or product use. An ordinary DM reply is available only within the network's current reply window, which is 24 hours after the person's latest message. Older conversations can remain visible but may be view-only until the person writes again.
Pause a rule if the linked product sells out, a destination breaks or the offer changes. Update the store page before resuming. Stop the rule when the campaign has finished, even if its full monitoring period has not elapsed.
Use Shop Grid as a second product route
Not everyone will comment. A shoppable Shopify link in bio gives profile visitors another route to recent products. Shop Grid is available on every Flockly plan, while Auto-DM is a Growth and Scale feature.
The two routes can support the same campaign without making inflated attribution claims. A private message can offer the specific requested link. Shop Grid can keep the broader launch collection accessible from the profile. Flockly reports only outcomes connected by the available journey evidence; it cannot prove that every order was caused by a comment or message.
A practical launch example
A homeware store publishes a Reel showing three linen tablecloth colours. The caption says, “Comment TABLE for the colour guide and product links.”
The merchant creates one rule for the live Reel, uses TABLE as the keyword, and writes a short message explaining that the buttons open current product pages. Three buttons link to the colour variants. Before starting, the merchant opens every button, checks stock and asks a colleague to leave one test comment.
During the campaign, the team reviews the rule activity and answers genuine follow-up questions in the DM inbox. If one colour sells out, they pause the rule and update the message or destination before continuing. After the launch window, they stop the rule and keep the record for review. The workflow stays useful because the promise, message and destination remain aligned.
