How to create Shopify product photos with AI
Turn a Shopify product image into campaign-ready social creative, with a practical brief, product-detail checks and approval before credits are used.
To create a Shopify product photo with AI, begin with the clearest available reference image, define one useful campaign scene, and keep the product facts fixed. In Flockly, choose a Shopify product or another image in Creative Studio, describe the direction, review the exact credit quote, and confirm before generation starts. The result still needs a merchant review. Shopify's current AI product photography guide recommends representing the product honestly and keeping a shared visual style. Check the product shape, colour, packaging, label and any visual claim before publishing it.
Start with the job the image needs to do
A useful brief starts with purpose. Decide whether the image should introduce a product, show it in context, explain scale, support a seasonal campaign or provide a clean catalogue-style alternative. One image rarely does all those jobs well.
A candle merchant might need a quiet bedside scene for an evening-routine post. A jewellery store might need an On Model image that shows how an earring sits. A food brand might need a clean product shot with room around it for flexible social crops. The product stays the same, but the scene and framing follow the campaign.
Write one sentence that names the product, setting, mood, framing and use. “Place this navy travel mug on a rain-damp station bench in soft morning light, with the label visible and space above for a story crop” gives a clearer target than “make this look premium”.
Choose a strong product reference
Use a reference that makes the product easy to identify. Shopify explains that product images are displayed across its sales channels and should be high quality in its product media types guide. A sharp front or three-quarter view with even light usually provides more useful information than a distant lifestyle photograph. Avoid a starting image where hands, props or shadows hide important edges.
Open Content → Creative Studio, choose Image, then select a Shopify product, a media-library image or an upload under Reference images. Product references guide identity, including shape, colour, logo and label. They do not force the new scene to copy the original composition.
Choose Create with references when you want a new setting or composition around the product. Choose Edit this image when you want to preserve the existing picture and change a specific part, such as its background. Crop, resize and social expansion are more controlled operations for an image that already works. See using Shopify products and media for available source options.
Build a brief that protects product truth
Separate facts from creative choices. Facts include the product's physical form, material, colour, label and packaging. Creative choices include setting, camera angle, light, props and mood.
A practical brief can cover:
- Product: the exact item and details that must remain recognisable.
- Scene: the place, surface, season or activity around it.
- Light: soft daylight, direct sun, warm indoor light or a restrained studio setup.
- Camera: close detail, overhead arrangement, eye-level scene or generous negative space.
- Use: feed image, story crop, campaign header or Shop Grid tile.
- Exclusions: unwanted text, extra products, altered packaging or implausible use.
Do not ask the image to invent evidence. A generated lifestyle scene should not imply a customer testimonial, medical result, durability test or certification the merchant cannot support. Add accurate claims later in the caption, where they can be checked against the product page.
Pick the right Creative Studio workflow
Creative Studio is included on Starter, Growth and Scale. Product Shot and Lifestyle scene suit many campaign images. On Model is useful when wear, fit or human scale matters. Generative edit suits a specific change to an existing image. Social expansion can extend a composition into supported canvases, while ordinary crop, resize and export use no creative credits.
Current guide prices appear in Flockly plans and features. Flockly displays an exact quote before a paid generation begins, and that review card is the current price to rely on. Monthly allowances differ by plan, unused credits do not roll over, and retained Creative assets count towards a separate storage allowance.
The tool can also develop a campaign direction from a product and optional inspiration. Inspiration should guide an original direction, rather than be treated as permission to copy another brand's work.
Review before spending credits
Planning a direction does not start generation. Read the proposed brief and correct anything vague before selecting Review credit quote. Confirm the reference, output type, number of results and quoted credits.
Generation starts only after you approve the quote. The selected reference material and approved brief are then processed to create the result. This checkpoint matters because a small wording change can alter the scene. If hands holding the bottle are optional, say so. If the exact cap colour is essential, name it.
A strong first brief is usually more useful than repeatedly generating broad ideas. Keep successful language as a reusable direction, then vary the season, surface or crop for the next campaign.
Check the result like a product page
Compare the result with the Shopify product and check:
- silhouette, proportions and component count;
- material, colour and finish;
- logo, label and packaging details;
- realistic contact with hands, clothing or surfaces;
- unwanted text, duplicated objects or visual artefacts;
- enough safe space for the intended crop; and
- whether the scene suggests an unsupported product claim.
Product checks can flag some problems, but they cannot guarantee perfect lettering or every detail. Reject or refine a result that could mislead a customer. Keep the reference open during review rather than relying on memory.
Turn the approved image into a campaign
Save the approved result to the media library, then use it in a draft. Tailor the crop, caption and destination for each channel. A feed image may need a different opening from a Pinterest Pin, while product facts should stay consistent.
For a repeatable campaign, create a small set with different jobs: a clean hero image, one contextual image and one detail view. Schedule only after the product, destination, price-sensitive wording and preview have been checked. How to schedule Shopify product posts covers publishing, while planning a month of Shopify social content places the creative in a wider campaign.
